Abu-Zar’s interest in volunteer youth work began at an early age through activity within Young Muslims Glasgow, Islamic Society of Britian (ISB) and Al-Furqan Mosque, where he undertook a range of activities, projects and responsibilities over 25 year period.
More recently, he launched Aspire Higher, a demand-led pilot project which developed a range of support and events targeted at learners across all ages. The overarching vision was to develop a talent pool of Muslim professionals who were committed to sharing experiences, provide expert advice and offer opportunities.
Utilising this talent pool events such as career fairs, CV clinics, and UCAS application workshops were delivered across an 18 month period. A number of successful outcomes ensued and continue such as placement opportunities (i.e. Airbus, dentists and government), ongoing mentoring and partnership projects.
