Secondary school mentoring
Mosaic's secondary school mentoring connects successful Muslims from a wide range of backgrounds with young Muslims and their peers aged 11-18 years old living in highly deprived areas of the UK in order to raise aspirations and provide opportunities.
Aim
The mentor network includes individuals drawn from a wide range of professions and backgrounds who can inspire and motivate young people to fulfil their potential by sharing their own experiences and discussing some of the challenges they might face. Mentees also benefit from World of Work visits and engagement with Mosaic's Speakers Bureau.
Objectives
The programme addresses issues of:-
- Low motivation (de-motivated to attend school and future ambitions)
- Low levels of confidence (those that need support to help increase self-esteem)
- Low academic attainment (students needing encouragement to increase grades)
- Low attendance and punctuality (students affected by truancy)
Mentors commit to six hour long sessions in an academic year. A pool of 5-10 mentors will be paired with a mentee group; each mentor is then assigned a small group with whom they will work at every session. Mentors are trained and provided with a Mosaic Resource Pack to provide guidance in addressing skills, behaviour and motivation concerns, as well as career and further education options. While most mentors are Muslim and operate in areas of high Muslim population, all young people benefit from the primary school and secondary school mentoring programmes regardless of their faith background and we welcome non-Muslim mentors
