Sayka Hussain is a successful civil servant and highly valued member of the Mosaic network. As someone who is blind, Sayka has overcome many challenges and is a source of great inspiration. Sayka first volunteered with Mosaic in September 2009 as a mentor for the Mosaic UK Mentoring Programme at Connaught School for Girls in Leytonstone. Never missing a session and building a strong relationship with her mentees, Sayka encouraged the girls to achieve and really inspired them to feel that they can overcome any barrier life throws at them.
As a successful mentor and role model in our schools programme we were delighted when Sayka applied to participate in the Mosaic International Summit 2010 as a UK delegate. Again demonstrating her courage and willingness to go out of her comfort zone for a good cause, Sayka put her trust in Mosaic and committed to taking part in the two week residential leadership development programme along with 80 complete strangers from across the world. Despite her reservations about how she would get along in an unknown setting with unfamiliar people, Sayka’s participation was a great success. Sayka was often to be found at the centre of discussions and threw herself into all activities with great energy and enthusiasm. Any preconceptions that other delegates had were quickly dispelled. Sayka spoke to them about her disability with a frankness and openness that made it very easy for others to relate to. She was extremely patient with delegates and staff alike in explaining how best to guide someone who is visually impaired and how she uses technology to her advantage. It was a great learning curve for all involved.
Since the Summit Sayka has put her learning into action. With her new increased confidence, Sayka has been raising the profile of issues faced by those who have disabilities. As well as talking about the issue on Iqra TV, she has also been working with Kitaba Islamic Texts for the Blind and has helped to plan the first Umrah trip for visually impaired Muslims. Sayka truly demonstrates the passion, commitment and humility that Mosaic values in its network. She shows rare determination and is a fantastic role model to all.
