Primary Schools Graduate at Greenwich
Mothers and daughters were celebrated at Greenwich University on 27th January for completing the Primary Schools Mentoring project. Mentors, teachers and friends gathered for the graduation ceremony in the beautiful buildings at Greenwich, hearing from Almeena Ahmed, BBC London and Mosaic mentor, and Debbie Hayes of Greenwich University.
The girls, aged 7-9 years old, and their mothers from Kobi Nazrul and Manorfield School in Tower Hamlets took part in this 10 week programme designed to boost confidence and equip mothers with the skills to support their young daughters.
Covering topics such as citizenship and role models, the workshops aim to increase mothers' capacity to support their daughters by providing them with confidence, build their knowledge of the British education system, give them a sense of empowerment about their own abilities and encourage them to interact and build relationships.
For the girls, aged 7 to 10 years old, the project has helped broaden horizons and encouraged aspirations, increased self-esteem and built their resilience to negative influences, preventing issues that often come up in secondary school such as a lack of confidence in comparison to boys of the same age.
The project also included active involvement from Mosaic's female mentors - British Muslim professional's who are setting an inspiring example to other women, offering insights and experience from their own life and supporting both women and young girls to make positive life choices.
This programme currently runs in London, but will soon be expanding to other regions around the UK.
