The BBC generously hosted the first Media Network event of 2010. Around 150 guests arrived at the BBC Television Centre to hear from Aaqil Ahmed, Chair of Mosaic’s Media Network and Commissioning Editor and Head of Religion at the BBC, about both the BBC’s work on diversity and about the Media Network’s plans and offerings for the year ahead, including media internships.
The evening was compered by Mishal Hussain, BBC news presenter, who also spoke of her experiences working within the media and her involvement with Mosaic, encouraging more young Muslims to think of the media as an exciting and appealing career choice.
Those gathered were privileged to hear from Lucy Adams, Director of BBC People, about how important a diverse workforce to providing quality and how the BBC has been dealing with this.
John Yorke, BBC Controller of Drama, was also kind enough to give his time to illustrate the ways in which the BBC has looked at diversity in drama – both behind and in front of the camera. This was brought to life through a video that used Eastenders as a great example.
Having heard from such influential individuals, those gathered were able to stay a little longer in the iconic building and get the chance to network with one another and meet the speakers. There were many pitches being put to the gathered BBC Directors, so the opportunity was being well used!
Many thanks to Aaqil and the BBC for hosting such a fantastic event.
