18-year-old Ilyas Ahmed, a student from Slough and Eton College, had the opportunity of a lifetime arranged for him by Mosaic. Ilyas completed a week of work experience at The McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in April 2013, an experience most teenage F1 fans can only dream about!
Two races in to the 2013 Formula One season, on 8th April 2013, Ilyas started his life-changing week at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, working with the designers and race engineers who make the F1 spectacle possible. Summing up his emotions, Ilyas said on starting his first day: “I have counted each and every day since November (when I received the confirmation letter about my placement from McLaren). Today is the start of the most important and exciting week of my life so far!”
During his week, Ilyas worked across departments within McLaren Racing, finding out about the ultra high-technology that powers one of the most exciting and competitive sports in the world. Ilyas commented: “Watching the race this week [Chinese grand prix 12-14 April 2013] was hugely different, because I know the effort that goes into producing every little part for the cars.”
Ilyas summarised his work experience: “All-in-all, this experience was one which I never thought of doing this early in my life. Initially it was all a dream, but a few individuals made it all possible. It was a intense, but I have truly enjoyed every second of it, hopefully it will not be the last time go there. I can happily say it was the best week of my life so far!”
Ilyas completed a blog on every day of his placement at McLaren where he describes his feelings, experiences and hopes for the future.
