Mosaic is pleased to announce that we have entered into a mutually-beneficial partnership with IMAN (Inner-City Muslim Action Network), a community organisation based in Chicago, USA. The collaboration will enable the sharing of knowledge and expertise in many areas including mentoring and the rehabilitation of ex-offenders.
Established in 1997, IMAN’s mission is to promote health, wellness and healing in inner-city areas. It runs a range of charitable programmes and initiatives including a free health clinic, community arts festivals and transitional housing schemes for those who find themselves in difficult situations.
One of IMAN’s most innovative schemes is its Green Re-Entry programme, funded by the Al Faisal Foundation, one of Mosaic’s major supporters. The scheme works with ex-offenders and supports them in gaining construction qualifications by renovating derelict houses in the South Chicago area, creating affordable homes for sale in poor areas.
There’s a short video about the Green Re-Entry project below:
Even though the Green Re-Entry project could not be simply transferred wholesale to the UK, not least due to the very different housing markets in our two counties, there’s still much that Mosaic can learn from IMAN’s excellent work with ex-offenders.
In return, Mosaic is going to provide IMAN with the benefits of its expertise in mentoring, which is integral to all of our work in the UK and abroad. Mosaic has nearly ten years of experience of using mentors to inspire and motivate the most vulnerable in society and it is an area that IMAN is keen to explore more fully.
Mosaic’s Managing Director, Jonathan Freeman recently visited Chicago to finalise the partnership and said: “Collaboration and the sharing of skills and knowledge is in Mosaic’s DNA and so it gives me great satisfaction to be embarking on a partnership with IMAN.
“It’s clear to me that our two organisations share a determination to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged in our societies. I’m hugely impressed with the work that IMAN carries out in Chicago, just as I am proud of our work with Mosaic. I’m certain that we can help each other to be even more effective in the communities in which we work”.
