With around 900 students including a Sixth Form, Beechwood has collaborated with Mosaic for the last 4 years, running both the Enterprise Challenge and Secondary School mentoring programmes, having been introduced to Mosaic by delivery partner in the region, Learning to Work. The school is one of many in the local area working with Mosaic that are supported by the Heathrow Community Fund’s Inspiring Youth Programme.
A team of pupils from the school were recently announced as runners up in the South East Regional Final of the 2016 Enterprise Challenge competition, having beaten hundreds of students from others schools in the region to reach the final.
Richard Jonson, Head of Business at Beechwood School, believes Mosaic’s mentoring programmes are extremely beneficial to both pupils and the school.
He said: “Mentoring gives our year 9 and 10 students the opportunity to interact with role models and business ambassadors to help develop them and support their understanding of the working environment and the skills needed.
“Our relationship with Mosaic has been positive from the beginning and we have been supported through the whole process. The mentoring programmes are inspiring and because they are delivered over seven weeks there is time for them to make a real impact.”
Marie Matthews, Business Studies Teacher at Beechwood School, added: “I would like to commend Katie on the journey she has made so far in GCSE Business. At the start of the academic year she was quiet, reserved and lacked confidence to participate in group activities.
“Since having the opportunity to take part in the Mosaic Enterprise Challenge, her communication and presentation skills have improved. In class she is now a more confident student who actively participates in group activities and is willing to put her points of view across.”
Having completed the Enterprise Challenge, pupils at the school were asked to complete a survey offering feedback on their experiences:
- 86% said their experience of the programme was excellent or very good
- 89% would take part again
- 85% agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend it to a friend
- 93% agreed or strongly agreed that they are now confident in knowing the basics about working in business
